I like the idea of using a blog for responses when doing a whole class or small group reading of a novel. I also think a blog could be used for daily journal writing allowing students to decide which entries they would like to be published or which would be kept private.
If the blog were to be used as a personal journal with some public posts, I think informal writing would be appropriate. I would still caution my students to ALWAYS consider their audience when they write. We (husband, teenagers and myself) communicate throughout the day in group texts. We were texting about the evening plans when my daughter wrote, "TBH, I don't really want to go swimming." My husband asked her if she just referred to him as a "total butt head". Of course the other teens chimed in with their laughing/crying emojis and assured him that she wasn't insulting him she was just being honest (to be honest).
